In times of loss, attending a funeral is an opportunity to pay respects and offer support to grieving loved ones.
While the main focus is on honoring the deceased and showing empathy for the bereaved, choosing the appropriate attire is a sign of respect and understanding.
If you’re currently struggling to find something to wear or wondering if it’s appropriate enough, don’t worry, I’ve got you.
Here’s a full guide that I’ve compiled to help you choose the right outfit. So let’s get straight to it.
Outfit Suggestions:
1. Classic Black Dress

A black dress is the epitome of traditional funeral attire, and the most popular choice. It’s comes first on this list as it’s my go-to.
As a suggestion, opt for a knee-length or midi dress with a conservative neckline.
You can also look for additional simple yet elegant details such as a lace trim or some subtle pleats. Pair it with black stockings, closed-toe black pumps and understated jewelry like pearl earrings. That’s it!
2. Black Pantsuit

I really like the black pantsuit as it offers a modern yet respectful look to your outfit. All that’s needed is a fitting blazer with straight-leg trousers.
Underneath it all, you can opt to wear a black or white blouse with, of course, a modest neckline. Then, go on to complete the look with black loafers or heels alongside a minimalist handbag.
3. Charcoal Gray Dress

A charcoal gray dress provides a slightly softer look compared to the black whilst also playing its part for the occasion. Importantly, opt for a dress with clean lines with minimal design elements.
4. Black Skirt and Blouse

In my opinion, having a black skirt paired with a simple blouse is an excellent choice. The skirt should of course be modest, where it’s not too tight or short.
As for the blouse, well it should have a high neckline with ideally long sleeves. Once again, choose black or neutral-colored shoes with minimal to no accessories to maintain a respectful appearance.
5. Long-Sleeve Midi Dress

A long-sleeve midi dress can definitely be a simple but excellent choice. Have it in a modest cut and steer clear of any bright patterns!
To complete the look, pair it with black shoes and a simple and minimalist handbag (or just a black handbag.)
6. Black Turtlenecks

For a chic and contemporary look, pair a black turtleneck with pants or a black skirt. I’m a big fan of this outfit combo because it’s both stylish and respectful, AND it offers comfort without compromising the need for formality.
Finish the look off with black ankle boots and a small black handbag.
7. The Blazer Dress

A blazer dress provides a streamlined and elegant silhouette. Don’t forget to throw on some black stockings/tights to look more formal.
Important thing to note: The dress should be about knee-length or longer. Refrain from getting a blazer dress that’s too oversized.
8. Blazer with Skirt

A blazer with a skirt is an understated option that you can add to your shortlist. Have the suit in colors like black, charcoal or navy, while the skirt should be knee-length.
To finish off the look. I recommend wearing a simple blouse underneath and a pair of black or dark-colored heels.
9) Cardigan and Midi Dress

Possibly one of the my preferred outfits for attending a funeral. Select a midi dress in a solid, dark color.
Then, add a coordinating dark cardigan for an extra layer of warmth and elegance. The above picture is a great reference for a midi dress, however, do get a cardigan that’s mono colored without stripes and patterns instead.
The outfit above is for style inspiration purposes and the cardigan should be a plain design that’s ideally black in color.
Complete the look with black or dark-colored flats or low heels.
10) Black Shift Dress

The simplicity of the shift dress offers a clean and respectful look. To make it more chic, add a dark, solid-colored or subtly patterned scarf as a nice and subtle touch to the outfit.
Wear a pair of dark colored shoes, some minimal jewelry and you’re all set.
Conclusion
All in all, choosing an outfit for a funeral involves careful consideration of respect, tradition, and personal comfort.
But it shouldn’t be difficult as the key is to solely prioritize modesty and simplicity by avoiding overly bright colors or any extravagant accessories. So I hope this article has been useful for you in planning your outfit. I’ll see you in the next one!
